Team USA’s boat for the Opening Ceremony of the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris was star-studded as the country’s greatest athletes all took the southern bank of the Seine River. A rainy evening in Paris that didn’t stop America’s best from taking in the moment and interacting with one another to kick off the Olympics.
There were plenty of conversations, selfies, and handshakes between the U.S. Olympians as many reconnected and others met one another for the first time with world’s colliding across sports. With an interaction between fencer Lee Kiefer and two of USA Basketball’s best representing one of the best.
Keifer was on the second level of the American vessel when she spotted Stephen Curry and A’ja Wilson down below. Reaching out for an awesome handshake and introduction that can be seen below.
Sunday was a big day for the United States in Paris as Keifer took home her second straight gold medal in the individual women’s foil. Defeating American Lauren Scruggs in a 15-6 victory that made her the first U.S. woman to win two gold medals in the foil.
Meanwhile on the court, Team USA’s men’s basketball team defeated Serbia 110-84 in their first matchup of group play in Paris following a 5-0 record in their USA Basketball Showcase exhibition games. A matchup where Curry scored 11 points and Kevin Durant led all scorers with 23 points off of the bench.
Wilson and the women’s team will face Japan in their first game of the group phase on Monday at 3:00 p.m. ET as they pursue their eighth straight gold medal.
Lee Kiefer made history on Sunday in Paris following her 15-6 victory over fellow American Lauren Scruggs in the women’s individual foil fencing finals in Paris. Taking home her second-straight gold medal at the 2024 Summer Olympics and becoming the first U.S. woman to win two Olympic gold medals in individual foil.
Sunday also marked the first time ever that the United States had two women in the individual foil finals.
Kiefer was born in Cleveland, Ohio and raised in Lexington, Kentucky, a decorated fencer at Notre Dame in her college career where she won five NCAA championships before graduating in 2017. Also currently a medical student at the University of Kentucky alongside her husband Gerek Meinhardt. Who also will be competing in the Summer Olympics in Paris in fencing for the United States.
